A Sudden Call and a Chilling Message
I hadn’t seen my friend in months—just the occasional call, a text here and there. Although we commonly saw each other a few times per year, COVID made visits impossible, and though I knew she was sick, I didn’t realize how sick she really was.
So when she called me out of the blue, I was taken back. Her voice was thin, and her words a step above a whisper: she was in hospice. After a broken up conversation, a nurse had taken the phone away from her and uttered,
“You could come soon.”
The message was clear.
Two days later, I drove an hour into the city to see her. When I arrived, the same nurse met me outside, then warned me that my friend had stopped speaking the day before and was heavily sedated.
“Talk like normal,” she said. “She won’t talk back or open her eyes, but we know hearing is the last thing to go. “ She tapped my shoulder and added, “Trust me, she’ll hear everything you say.”
A Haunted Smile and One Final Connection
I walked into the room and barely recognized her. She had lost a lot of weight and her once large baby blue eyes were shut. I froze, unsure of what to say. Then I remembered the outside of the hospital.
Right outside the building stood a 40-foot statue of a spotted dog. It reminded me of my own dog, a Blue Tick Heeler named Duke. My friend had always loved my dog,—I had posted about him constantly on my social media, and she never missed a story about his puppy antics, and commented on every one. And he was ALWAYS a subject of conversation when we spoke.
So under the grave conditions I decided on a quick joke,
“Of course you’d pick a hospital with a giant Duke outside.”
And then—it happened, she smiled. Didn’t open her eyes. But turned her head towards me and smiled. I held back tears as one dimple reappeared briefly. Shocked, I glanced at the nurse who gave me a solemn nod.
The moment was brief before my friend returned to whatever world she had been peeking into. It was the last time we ever communicated .
At least that’s what I thought…..
A Paranormal Sign at 3AM
That night, around 3 a.m., I woke up and couldn’t fall back asleep. Restless and sad over my visit, I scrolled through social media—and right there at the top of my feed was a photo of that dog statue. It looked like it had been taken from the street. But shockingly I realized, It was on her “Story”.
I smiled. Somehow, I thought she must’ve felt a little better, maybe even had her phone for a second. Maybe she didn’t require any pain medication or sedation? This was great! perhaps I could go back the next day and we could talk!
And at some point, I fell asleep.
The next morning, the moment I awoke, I immediately checked her page—and saw a flood of condolences from friends.
“Heaven gained an angel.”
She had passed in the night .
A Ghostly Glitch or a Message from Beyond?
Although I had called her husband to offer condolences I never mentioned the story to him for obvious reasons…..
A few years later, by one eerie stroke of chance, her husband’s life crossed mine, and in that , I saw him more frequently.
One night, when we were all out with friends, I asked him if his wife had used her phone the day she died? Had she texted him throughout the day? He shook his head, confused and continued to tell me how she was unresponsive for a few days before she died and that she had no access to her phone.
This …… is typically where I’d stop, but I pressed on,
“Did you post anything on her Story, the day she passed?”
He just gave me “the look”, and it was dropped right there.
Is This a True Ghost Encounter?
What do you think? I’d love to hear.
