What if the reason we can’t prove ghosts… isn’t because they don’t exist?
What if it’s because we’ve been trained not to see them?
This idea, which is often called the “filter theory” , suggests that the problem isn’t a lack of paranormal evidence. Instead, it may be that our minds, our culture, and even science itself are filtering out anything that doesn’t fit what we’ve been taught is “real.”
What Is the “Filter”?
There’s a psychological concept known as a reality tunnel. It is the idea that every person experiences the world through a mental filter shaped by beliefs, culture, and expectations.
From a young age, most of us are taught:
- Ghosts aren’t real
- There’s always a logical explanation
- Don’t trust what you think you saw
Over time, this creates a powerful effect:
We begin to dismiss our own experiences automatically.
A shadow in the corner becomes “nothing.”
A strange sound becomes “the house settling.”
A feeling of being watched becomes “just anxiety.”
But what if those explanations are the filter… not the truth?
The Taboo Around Believing in Ghosts
Even today, believing in ghosts carries a stigma. I’ve written about my own stigma here on this Blog.
If you tell someone you had a paranormal experience, the response is usually immediate:
- “You were tired.”
- “Your brain tricked you.”
- “There’s a rational explanation.”
And sometimes, that’s true.
But psychology shows that our brains are wired to confirm what we already believe—a concept known as cognitive bias.
So if you already believe ghosts aren’t real…
Your brain will actively work to reinterpret your experience so it fits that belief.
That’s the filter in action.
The Scientific Method vs. the Paranormal

Science is built on something incredibly powerful:
The scientific method.
- Observation
- Measurement
- Repetition
- Controlled conditions
And here’s the problem…
Ghosts don’t behave that way.
They don’t appear on command.
They don’t repeat consistently.
They don’t show up in controlled environments.
In the Scientific Method an investigator must control variables. BUT- what if there are variables we are not aware of ? Like psychic ability, alternate realities, quantum fields? How can you control variables that can not be measured?
Because of that, science largely dismisses them.
Many reported ghost encounters are explained as:
- Sleep paralysis
- Hallucinations
- Pareidolia (seeing faces or figures in randomness)
- Environmental factors affecting perception
Materialism: The Ultimate Filter
Modern science is heavily influenced by a philosophy called materialism; the idea that only physical matter exists.
If something can’t be:
- Measured
- Observed physically
- Tested repeatedly
…it’s often dismissed.
Some theories, like elimination materialism, go even further, suggesting that even subjective experiences can be rejected if they don’t fit biological explanations.
This creates a powerful limitation:
If ghosts don’t fit the model…
They aren’t studied.
And if they aren’t studied…
They can’t be proven.
What If the Filter Works Both Ways?

But what if science is also interpreting reality through its own filter?
Some researchers have questioned whether materialism can fully explain consciousness, or reality itself.
So now we’re left with two competing filters:
- One that filters OUT the paranormal
- One that filters IN only what can be measured
And somewhere between them is the possibility that something real is being missed.
Real Cases Where the “Filter” May Be at Work
The Enfield Poltergeist (England, 1977)
A family reported:
- Furniture moving
- Disembodied voices
- Physical disturbances
Multiple witnesses, including investigators, claimed to see events firsthand. Yet the case remains controversial. Skeptics say it was a hoax. Believers say it was real.
Or… was it filtered?
The Amityville Horror (New York, 1975)
We’ve all heard of it. A family claimed their home was haunted by violent paranormal activity:
Unexplained phenomena
Voices
Apparitions
The story became famous—but also heavily criticized. Many dismissed it entirely as a fabrication. But here’s the question:
Was it all false… or was some of it dismissed because it didn’t fit expectations?
Sleep Paralysis & Shadow Figures (Global Phenomenon)
Across cultures, people report the same terrifying experience:
- Waking up unable to move
- Feeling a presence in the room
- Seeing a dark, shadowy figure
Science explains this as sleep paralysis
But here’s the mystery: Why do so many people describe the same entity? Is it just the brain…or are we all experiencing something—and filtering it differently?
Final Thought: Are We Ignoring the Evidence?
The next time something feels off…
A sound.
A shadow.
A presence.
Ask yourself:
Did nothing happen?
Or…
