Do children see ghosts

Why Children See Ghosts—and Adults Don’t

Have we been conditioned?

Children often report seeing ghosts, spirits, or unexplained figures—images that adults typically dismiss as imagined. But what if it’s not imagination? What children are attuned to something real—something we, as adults, have been told to block out?

In this post, I’ll  explore real ghost sightings by children, famous paranormal cases involving kids, the brain science behind it, and why adults rarely see spirits anymore. I’ll also share my own experience with the unexplained.

My Childhood Encounter with a Ghost

Real Signs That Kids Might Be Experiencing the Paranormal

Children often exhibit unusual behaviors that hint at a paranormal presence. Have you ever heard a story about children talking to unseen people or “imaginary” friends, or very young children refusing to enter specific rooms or locations. Perhaps you’ve had a child describing objects moving on their own or reporting “bad dreams” with precise details. These aren’t just quirks—they might be early indicators of ghost activity.

Famous Paranormal Cases Involving Children

The Wesley Family (1716 – England)

The Watseka Wonder (1877 – Illinois)

The Enfield Poltergeist (1977 – London)

Celebrities Who Saw Ghosts as Children

  • Kate Hudson once said, “I see dead people all the time.” Her childhood included regular sightings, including a faceless woman.
  • Keanu Reeves described seeing a ghost in a white suit silently drift across his room in childhood.

Ariana Grande experienced shadow figures, whispering voices, and unexplained sulfur smells at a haunted site.

4 REASONS Why Children Are More Likely to See Ghosts

 Underdeveloped Prefrontal Cortex

The prefrontal cortex is used for logical thought. This is underdeveloped in children. Children rely more on emotion and intuition than logic, making them more receptive to energies and entities that adults may tune out.

No Learned Skepticism

Children haven’t yet been conditioned to believe that ghosts are “Nonexistnet”. As young children many parents actually accept the “imaginary friend”  as a wildly developed imagination, and not an actual example of psychic ability.

Theta Brainwave Dominance

Kids operate in theta brainwaves, which as mentioned above, is linked to dreaming and  intuition, and as many feel are “psychic acceptance”.  As we mature this, we move to more Alpha brainwaves which deal with “logic” and “inference”.

Fewer Distractions

With less stress in their lives, children may be more focused on unseen changes in their environment. Visions are interpreted as creativity and play takes precedence in daily activity.

Why Adults Stop Seeing Spirits

As we age, we are conditioned to ignore the unseen. And sadly, even become skeptical or distasteful to anything that can not be scientifically explained. It’s not that most adults stop sensing ghosts—they simply stop noticing them.

Final Thoughts: Relearning to See the Unseen

If children can experience the supernatural because they’re open, maybe we can retrain ourselves to do the same. I feel, our sixth sense isn’t lost, it’s just socially cast aside.

Do you or your children have any experience with the paranormal? If so, I’d love to hear. Please comment below and subscribe!

You may be haunted and waiting as well.

As a child and young adult, I had a lot of ghostly encounters. One was a regular that I often saw in my doorway at night when I was a kid. As I got older, I stopped seeing them but could still feel their presence and noticed when my stuff was moved. And then as I got into my thirties, I couldn’t sense them anymore. Which makes sense because my in my thirties I finally felt like my brain was functioning on an adult level. My first instinct is to be logical and skeptical now, and I’ll catch myself and be like “eww, no!” I genuinely miss coming to a paranormal conclusion for things. It definitely made life more magical. Trying to unlearn some things and get back to a place where whimsy and unknowns exist again.

Love that “Trying to unlearn some things” . Its exactly what i believe . we are taught not to believe so we don’t see it any longer

    3. I do think it leaves us as we get older unless we actively try to stay in the “Now” and remove the filter. That, I feel, can only be done through meditation and refusing to speak to non-believers about the topic.

Yeah I was about 6-7 years of age when I had experienced such a thing. I didn’t know anything about demons or evil spirits in my childhood. At night I would leave my eyes open at night and I would stare my my chest of drawers at times. Then I saw a pair of blue eyes staring back at me. I quickly tucked my body under the sheets for about 2-3 minutes, then I would move my sheets to see if anything was there. Nothing was there. This would happen for some time because I left my eyes open at night from time to time. One night I left my arm out one night and I would feel my hand being touched and a finger would circle around my hand. I immediately put my hand back in my bed that night. Again this could of been a unclean spirit touching my hand for no apparent reason. Any ways later in in life I moved up to Bible college with my family here in West Auckland,,NZ in 1989,1990. I stayed in a family flat situation with my family. One night, I was about to sleep at night and shut my eyes. Where our bedroom was, there was a mirror facing our beds opposite. One of those long mirrors, rectangular size. Anyways, I was about to shut my eyes at night, I saw a figure. It looked like this was directly behind my bed. I remember just looking at it and it did like a happy but creepy smile at me. I put my head under the sheets for 2-3 mins, I looked back, if was still there looking me. Again I put my sheets over my head, then I looked again towards the mirror, it disappeared.

i hadn’t or hadn’t seen anything like that in my lifetime today and didn’t know about demons at that time. I didn’t realize evil spirits could do this to you if you had sleeping issues at night.

Anyways, just to let you know if you have sleeping issues at night or have experienced something like this, please come forward. Always at night please ask God and his angels for protection at night while you sleep and always put the blood of Jesus on your house, property, etc.

    This does help alot.

    God bless you all.

    Matt

    1. Your story does not seem all that rare. A lot of people have private emailed me about situations that were similar and that they just don’t want to talk about it for fear of being teased. I do agree that having faith will help you through anything as frightening as this and I hope you found peace with it. I don’t talk much about demons or evil spirits because I’m frankly afraid of that. But I hope this is all behind you now. Be well friend and thank you for your comment . -Ann

    1. I don’t think you necessarily stop sensing ghosts at 18 I just think that bu the time someone is close to adulthood (Like at the age of 18) they
have been so conditioned that the ability seems to disappear
